DIY Landscaping Ideas and Tips for 2022

by supportfirstnations

It’s hard to believe that 2022 has rolled around already. But keen gardeners will be more aware of the passing of time, as the seasons dictate the work they have to do in their outdoor spaces. As the snow thaws and the greenery emerges from winter it’s time to think about planting, maintaining, or updating the garden. The last couple of years of lockdowns, social distancing, and other measures against the coronavirus pandemic have given us a newfound love for the outdoors, and respect for the impact our gardens have on our mental and physical well-being. So why not set yourself a new project for the new year? Whether you’re going for a complete redesign or simply sprucing things up with some small changes, check out our ideas and tips for DIY landscaping in your backyard.

Make a plan (and a budget)

Every project, big or small, needs a detailed and thorough plan. Start by asking yourself what you need in the garden, and what you want. You may want more space to place flowers, plants or vegetables, or to make a place to socialize safely with your friends and family. Or, if you have kids, you may be thinking of a playground area. Whatever your intentions it’s important to assess the state of your garden and set a reasonable timeline for the project. A budget is equally important, and again, has to be realistic. Spend some time researching the materials you’ll need, as well as seeds or saplings.

Start small

While your project may grow and blossom into something large-scale, taking things step by step is also important. When planting crops, flowers or bushes take into account not only the soil conditions, sunlight and water, but also how much work you’re willing to put into your garden. There are plenty of ways to make the yard easier to maintain

Find a focal point

When it comes to designing your garden, think about the features you already have, and if any of those may be developed into a focal point – if not you should definitely find something to base the rest of the space around. If you’re lucky enough to have a huge backyard you may need a few points of focus – these could be trees, a series of beautiful flower beds or shrubs, or a statue or fountain.

Lawn

Often the centerpiece of a garden is the lawn, and keeping it in good nick is paramount to a healthy-looking space. Maintain your grass by keeping it watered – specific times of day, either morning or evening is better as you lose less water to evaporation. Keeping it trimmed is also important, not too long, not too short. Topdressing with sand, compost or other materials helps to improve drainage and soil health. And improve the overall look of the lawn with edging – this can be done in a variety of styles to suit any design aesthetic.

Tones and continuity

Over the last year, tonal gardens have become all the rage – many gardeners are planting lush, forestry greens, or ranges of blue or purple wildflowers. As well as giving a lush, enveloping feel which relaxes the mind, it also creates a pleasing continuity. Deciduous trees, shrubs, and evergreens, mixed in with ferns and neutral flowers are good starting points to consider.

Walls and fences

Another word cropping up recently in garden design circles is ‘hardscaping’. Using walls or fences in a bold, eye-catching way makes a real statement. Take some cues from the school of brutalism, often combined with vegetation to bring life to cityscapes. But continuity is important here as well – if your home is a traditional cottage or similar, a minimalist garden won’t sit well. Fences also provide some privacy from the outside world.

Water features

The sound of running water is relaxing in a garden, and water features can also be used as a focal point. Fountains can be installed fairly easily without any need for a contractor. How big and elaborate your feature can be, depends on the size of your garden – if you have the space a large feature with plants and waterfalls or fish can really take the space to the next level.

A new year means a new project and fresh ideas to implement! Try some of the ones stated above to elevate your outdoor space to an area for relaxation, fun and quality time with your loved ones.
