All About Fashion Jewelry How to Clean and Care for Druzy

With all the spectacular druzy jewelry added to our boutique, there are some “after purchase” care instructions that you should pay attention to, in order to keep your quartz damage-free and sparkling.

About druzy:

Druzy (also spelled druse) when found naturally, is a coating of numerous fine crystals on a rock fracture, cavity or surface or within a geode — quartz being the most common type and also one of the most durable to work within the jewelry industry.

Because of its hard characteristics, druzy is also a favorite material of many designers, including Nina Nguyen. Druzy makes for some beautifully-crafted accessories that withstand the test of time and trends… and perhaps, even the changing of our own personal style. Not to mention, each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.

In fact, out of all the minerals whose hardness is measured by the Mohs scales, quartz rates at a 7. That means you can probably clean the gemstone itself with chemicals or mechanical tools, if necessary.

However (that’s a big “but” by the way), druzy quartz that is set in a metal cannot undergo these strong chemicals or cleaning machines because of the risk of damaging the frames or prongs. Also, without knowing the origin of the gemstone (if it’s quartz or another mineral), you should stay safe with the most gentle of jewelry cleaning methods.

How to clean druzy:

The simplest and safest way to maintain the beauty and shine of such a precious texture is to use a mild dishwashing liquid (ratio a small amount of soap to water). There are quartz jewelry cleaners available, but again, those can be used only on loose stones, and not on metal jewelry. To remove the dirt from the multi-crystal surface of druzy quartz jewelry, use a soft brush or a coarse cloth to scrub the gem while dipped in a mix of water and dish detergent.

Rinse your druzy quartz jewelry thoroughly and then air dry the items completely before wear or storage. A cloth can be used to dry the jewelry piece in entirety, but it should be mentioned that the natural surface of druzy can sometimes be sharp, rendering the method of soft and dry cloth-cleaning the druzy itself useless.

Additional druzy care:

Always keep druzy gems away from direct sunlight and extreme instances of heat.
Because of their texture, druzy jewelry should be stored away from your other items, as harder materials or stones can scratch the surface of the gemstone.
Store in a dry place, as long-standing moisture, can affect the stone.
NEVER exercise wearing druzy jewelry; sweat will damage the substance.
